Barclay Shaw
In the
mid 60's, Kirk Kirkham,
Jim Conley, Jim Sommers and myself went to see Barclay
at a club
on La Cienega Blvd. in Hollywood.
He did a teriffic magic
act and
then his amazing
marionettes Toto the clown and Clara Cluck, we were enthralled.
Barclay Shaw was born in Hosack, United Kingdom (1931-1992). His family
moved to
New York City when he was a young child. His interest in marionettes
began when he saw
a clown marionette on display at Macy's. His interest in magic started
when he saw a female
magician in Jamaica.
Barclay's early experience was in the Catskill Mountain resort area and
then on to
Miami Beach where he worked in every major hotel. He toured with
Holiday On Ice for
two years and then moved to Hollywood to work for Paramount Pictures in
their animation
department. In 1978 he was with the Liberace show. Barclay spent over
15 years as a
headliner in Las Vegas revues. He performed an amazing levitation in
which the floating girl
was surrounded by a Plexiglass box while still floating
(Toto the Clown and the Levitation are now part of Copperfirld's
collection.)
